A key component to successful waxing is appropriate education regarding general waxing practices, pre-waxing preparation and post-waxing care.  The following FAQs are provided to help answer any questions you may have regarding your waxing experience. What Exactly Is Waxing?

Waxing is a form of hair removal that removes the entire hair from the hair follicle. Warm wax is applied to the skin and adheres to the hair. When removed, the hair is pulled from the root.

What’s A Cerologist Technician

At Waxing the City, our licensed estheticians are not only waxing specialists, they are the ultimate professionals at their craft. This led us to create our very own title of Cerologist, which combines “cera” (Latin for wax) with “ologist” (to indicate their level of education and expertise). Only Waxing the City studios have Cerologists, so don’t look for them at other salons!

Does Waxing Hurt?

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but you can expect a short, stinging sensation after the strip is pulled. If you are worried about being sensitive, taking an ibuprofen or aspirin about 30 minutes before your appointment should minimize your discomfort (consult with your physician before taking medications). Continuous waxing causes finer and less hair therefore waxing becomes less painful.

Why Should I Wax vs Shaving, Electrolysis, or Laser?

If waxing is done consistently, hair grows back slower, finer, and sparser. Shaving cuts the hair off at the skin and the quantity and thickness of the hair stays the same. Shaving can also increase skin sensitivity and create a higher probability for ingrown hairs. Electrolysis and Laser hair removal doesn’t work for everyone and can be unpredictable and cost prohibitive.

What Kind Of Wax Do You Use?

We use 2 different types of wax. For the face and more sensitive areas of the body, we use a hard wax that shrink wraps and hardens around the hair and lifts from the skin creating a less painful removal. We use a more traditional soft wax for larger body areas such as legs, arms, chest, and back and it is removed by using a cloth strip.

How Long Can I Expect My Waxing To Last?

If you’ve allowed your hair to grow out to the proper length prior to waxing, you can expect to be hair-free for a minimum of 1-2 weeks following your appointment.

Will My Hair Grow Back Thicker Or Darker?

No, waxing actually has the opposite effect. Hair that is removed at the roots grows in finer and softer over time.

Is There An Age Limit For Getting Waxed?

Waxing is for everyone—guy or gal, young or old! Speaking of young, if you’re under 18, please bring a parent or guardian on your first visit as we need their consent. Better yet, have them book an appointment, too!

Can Someone Come In The Treatment Room With Me?

To provide optimal services, only the client and Cerologist™ technician are allowed in the treatment room during an appointment. Except for clients under the age of 15, where we invite a parent or guardian to be on hand.

Can I Be Waxed If I’m Taking Retin A, Renova, Or Accutane?

These medications increase the rate at which your skin exfoliates so waxing could potentially remove skin as well as hair. Please let your Cerologist™ technician know immediately if you are on any medications. Also be aware that chemical peels, laser, and micro-dermabrasion can also affect skin integrity.

Other Medications To Be Aware Of?

There are many medications that affect skin and skin integrity (glycolic acid, lactic acid, benzyl peroxide, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxyl acid, vitamin A, prescribed exfoliating scrubs, antibiotics, hormonal medications, radiation and/or chemotherapy drugs). Please consult with your physician in regards to any medications and how it may affect your waxing experience. Some brand names to be aware of: Adapalene, Avita, Tazorac Avage, Proactiv(e), Differin, Strivectin.

Will Price Decrease If I Don’t Have Much Hair?

Our charges are determined per service, not by amount of hair.

How Do I Pick A Good Hair Salon?

Providers should be licensed and specialists in skin care. Your provider should provide on-going education and help answer any questions you may have regarding the waxing process. The salon overall should be a clean and healthy environment.

Whats The Difference Between Bikini, Modified Bikini, & Brazilian?

Bikini – hair will be removed that extends outside of the panty line or crease of thigh.
Modified Bikini – a thin strip of hair will be left down the middle of the bikini area.
Brazilian Bikini – all hair removed including backside (some prefer leaving a small patch in front).

What Is Your Cancelation & No Show Policy?

We understand life may occasionally get in the way of your wax appointment.

If you do not show up for an appointment and did not call 24 hours in advance to reschedule or cancel, Waxing the City studios reserve the right to charge up to the full price of the scheduled service price (plus tax if applicable).

How Do I Prepare For My Waxing Service?

We recommend that you exfoliate the area several days prior to your appointment. Thoroughly clean the area keeping the skin moist, but not greasy from heavy lotions or oils.

How Long Does My Have To Be?

Hair needs to be at least ¼” to ½” for effective waxing. For most people this means waiting 2-4 weeks (minimum of 2 weeks) from the last time you shaved. The longer you wait, the better the results.

Can I Get Waxed If I’m On My Period

Yes. However, if you are concerned the increased hormone activity will make you more sensitive; avoid waxing 3 days before and the first 3 days of your cycle.

Can I Get Waxed If I’m Pregnant?

Absolutely. We are used to making our pregnant clients feel as comfortable as possible during their waxing experience.

Can I Tan Before A Wax?

Absolutely. We are used to making our pregnant clients feel as comfortable as possible during their waxing experience.

What Should I Wear To Get A Bikini Wax?

Whatever makes you comfortable, keeping in mind that the “skimpier” the underwear the better our Cerologist™ technicians can see what they are doing. Also, we encourage you to leave your new panties at home in case we get any wax on them. We also provide complimentary disposable underwear for your use.

Any Other Things I Should Consider Prior To Waxing?

Females may want to schedule their appointment during the first 2 weeks of their cycle as it will help decrease sensitivity.  Also, avoid stimulants such as caffeine as it may increase sensitivity levels.

How Do I Prevent Ingrown Hairs?

Ingrown hairs are thin hairs that cannot push through the skin resulting in inflammation. The best way to prevent is to gently exfoliate 2-3 times a week. We have a variety of products available including body scrubs, bath poufs, and Tend Skin to help minimize this condition.
